Class of 2023 inducted in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

The highly anticipated announcement for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2023 was made in Houston, Texas. This year’s class is set to represent the impact of the global game with legendary players and coaches who are not only household names in the game but those who teach, coach and counsel men and women.

The Inductees

The players and coaches that were announced to be inducted in the Class of 2023 include outstanding basketball players Dirk Nowitzki, Dwyane Wade, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker, Becky Hammon, and legendary coach Gregg Popovich, among others.

Nowitzki, a former power forward for the Dallas Mavericks and one of the most influential international players in NBA history, was awarded 14 NBA All-Star selections throughout his career. The former Miami Heat guard Wade also produced exceptional results during his time on the court and collected 13 NBA All-Star selections during his career.

Along with Nowitzki, Spain’s Pau Gasol and France’s Tony Parker became the first European basketball players to claim induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Both Gasol and Parker have done a lot to make international or European club basketball recognized by Americans.

Coaching Greatness

Led by Gregg Popovich who helped Tony Parker thrive with his leadership at San Antonio Spurs, this year’s coaching inductee features both legendary figures and up-and-coming younger coaches.

Popovich is one of the winningest coaches with five championships under his belt. He has served as head coach for several prestigious teams including San Antonio Spurs and USA Men’s National Team.

Becky Hammon – A Pioneer For Women

Becky Hammon is known as the first female fulltime assistant coach in NBA history. She will be recognized for her playing career in WNBA as an All-Star player being one of the best to ever play the game.

Hammond’s success speaks to the need for more women to be included in high-level coaching positions and managerial roles worldwide.

The Enshrinement Ceremony

The enshrinement ceremony will take place at Springfield Symphony Hall in August and will be nationally televised. The event will include a press conference, autograph session, enshrinement tipoff, and awards gala where inductees will receive their class of 2023 rings and jackets.

Moreover, The John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, the Mannie Jackson: Basketball’s Human Spirit Awards, and the Curt Gowdy Media Awards will also be honored at the gala.

Conclusion

The Class of 2023 inductees brings many memories from basketball history along with some fresh faces that have shown us new ways to look at the sport. The trend of top-tier European or international talent joining NBA is getting common which shows how basketball is becoming more universal over time.
