The entertainment industry could be shaken up as Amazon is reportedly considering acquiring the world’s largest chain of movie theaters, AMC Entertainment. According to various sources, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has tasked his team with exploring plans to purchase the chain in North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
Acquiring AMC would give Amazon brick-and-mortar locations to promote its Amazon Prime movies and cross-sell its services. In addition, it would allow Amazon to collect data from the 200 million moviegoers who sit in AMC’s seats. The move could also help Amazon improve its Prime benefits as part of a continuous investment strategy.
Following news of the potential acquisition, shares of AMC surged as much as 21% on Tuesday. AMC has struggled financially due to the COVID pandemic and inflation and currently has $4.6 billion of debt and a premium valuation. Wedbush Securities analyst Alicia Reese slammed the rumors, stating that the deal would unlikely be completed due to these factors.

During the pandemic, it closed 100 underperforming locations but has since opened 54 new better-performing sites. Moreover, it has partnered with Walmart and Visa to improve its loyalty program and offer rewards on purchases inside and outside the theater.
