The technology industry has cited macroeconomic uncertainties as well as “a need to find discipline on a tumultuous path to profitability” as reasons behind these mass layoffs. Big Tech firms have come under tremendous criticism for their HR-unfriendly approach to layoff administration. Conducting multiple rounds of layoffs, impersonal Zoom calls, and broad email notifications ultimately lead to unhappy survivors suffering from fear, uncertainty, and survivor’s guilt. Industry experts suggest making the best of a bad situation by minimizing harm during layoffs, communicating the reasons fully and honestly with employees, and reassuring them that it is a one-time event.
In conclusion, the year 2023 has turned out to be a tough year for the technology sector, with mass layoffs leading to stressful changes for thousands of workers. Only time can tell when this unpredictable paradigm will normalize.
