Country music singer, Granger Smith, announced in an emotional social media video that he is leaving his music career to pursue a life of ministry. Smith, who has released 10 studio albums and one live album, considers his upcoming Like a River tour as his farewell to the industry. The tour is named after his late son, River, who passed away in a tragic accident in 2019.
In his upcoming memoir titled Like a River: Finding the Faith and Strength to Move Forward After Loss and Heartache, which is set to release on August 1st, Smith details the process of healing after his son’s death. In the book, he reflects on his shifting priorities that led him to exit his current career and admits that he was glorifying himself through his music.
Despite quitting country music, Smith plans to continue playing music in his personal life. He also plans to bring his wife, Amber, and children on tour as much as possible during this transition. Amber has shown her support for her husband’s decision and remains his first point of counsel for everything.
Smith’s plans for the future will focus on pursuing ministry growth personally while serving at his local church outside of Austin, Texas. This move comes at a time when he feels a strong desire to serve people by helping them find their purpose. He is preparing for this next chapter by currently working towards a master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
In addition to pursuing ministry growth and spending more time with family, Smith wants to promote water safety awareness among parents in honor of River. He hopes he can use the platform he built during his music career to help others.
Smith’s decision to leave music has come after much thought, and he’s excited about what the future holds. He’s looking forward to pouring himself into his church after the tour comes to an end on August 26th. However, he admits that he is nervous about this next chapter in his life and is attending seminary while receiving guidance from his pastors and elders.
Although Smith is leaving country music, he will continue to host his iHeartRadio show, After MidNite, and his Granger Smith Podcast while pursuing his new passion as a minister.
