Golden State Warriors player Andrew Wiggins has been absent from the team for the past 20 games due to personal reasons. The former All-Star starter missed 15 games in March due to a health and safety protocol and an injured knee. He later resumed playing but has not returned since April, citing a personal family matter.
As the regular season comes to an end, uncertainty looms over the potential return of Wiggins. The Warriors have not provided any details about his absence, leaving fans and the media speculating. However, the team’s priority remains clear: Wiggins’ wellbeing above basketball.
Warriors general manager Bob Myers expects that Wiggins will return at some point during the season, although no specific timeline has been provided. The team is currently 11-9 during his absence, but they understand that life outside of basketball is more important.
The Warriors’ culture prioritizes life first and basketball second, with a focus on player wellness. Coach Steve Kerr has shown unwavering support for Wiggins, acknowledging that basketball is not the most important thing in life.
According to Kerr, “Andrew’s dealing with a personal issue that we’re supporting him through. It’s unfortunate for him and for us, but we’re going to help him out as best we can and welcome him back when he’s ready to come back.”
Wiggins’ teammate Steph Curry has also emphasized the importance of supporting Wiggins during this difficult time. “Basketball is important to us, obviously,” Curry said in a recent interview. “But as human beings, we have other things we gotta take care of.”
Despite the lack of information surrounding Wiggins’ absence, rumors have surfaced on social media about the player’s personal life. Warriors’ teammate Draymond Green, however, defended Wiggins in a recent podcast.
Green called the rumors “ridiculous” and “cringeworthy,” while also criticizing people for speculating about Wiggins’ private life. Wiggins’ girlfriend, Mychal Johnson, has also spoken out against the rumors.
If the Warriors are without Wiggins and injured player Gary Payton II in the playoffs, it would be difficult for the team. However, their priorities remain clear as they focus on supporting their players through difficult times and prioritizing their wellbeing over basketball.
Despite missing 35 games this season due to various injuries and health issues, Wiggins has been a reliable contributor for the Warriors, averaging 17.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. While fans may hope for his return soon, the team’s focus remains on supporting him and ensuring he takes as much time as he needs to deal with his personal situation.
