Pope Francis has been hospitalized with a respiratory infection that requires medical therapy at the Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome. The Vatican confirmed that it was not COVID-19 and the pope’s condition is stable. The Bishop of Rome had suffered from respiratory difficulties, which prompted him to be admitted for medical checks amid fears of worsening health. This news has caused concern among the Catholic community worldwide.
On Sunday evening, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis would remain hospitalized for a few days due to a respiratory infection. According to sources, it was further confirmed through tests that the pope does not have COVID-19, but rather a different type of respiratory illness.
The pope has previously experienced several health issues, including pain in his knee and diverticulitis. In July, he had surgery to remove part of his colon for an inflamed diverticulum condition. He has also been observed using a cane or wheelchair due to his knee problems.
On Wednesday morning before being admitted, the pope conducted a public audience in Vatican City, where he appeared to be in good form but was noticeably tired Monday.
Following news of the pope’s hospitalization, people worldwide began sending messages of support and prayer through social media and other platforms. Bishops across Italy are praying for Pope Francis’ speedy recovery.
In addition to concerns over his current state of health, many have raised questions about the possibility of resignation by the pope.
Pope Francis has signed a resignation document which acknowledges that he will resign if he becomes “impaired.” Likewise, some past popes have also drafted their resignation letters for possible use in case their health deteriorates beyond repair—such as Benedict XVI resigned in 2013 citing “advanced age.” The only pope to have stepped down voluntarily was Gregory XII in 1415 to end a civil war in the church.
As Pope Francis remained hospitalized, he has canceled his schedule until Saturday. This news has cast doubt on whether he will be able to lead the Palm Sunday service as scheduled.
The pope has previously acknowledged his age and difficulty walking but has continued to travel and make public appearances. According to Vatican sources, the pope is reluctant to undergo surgery for his knee due to long-term negative side effects from anesthesia.
In conclusion, the papal hospitalization is causing much concern among Catholics and non-Catholics alike. However, Pope Francis’ past record of resilient health, as well as his unwavering faith, is inspiring confidence that he will soon recover from the current respiratory infection.
