The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore confirmed the sudden and unexpected death of a beloved 6-year-old reticulated giraffe, Willow. The care team had noticed that Willow had a decreased appetite and showed other signs of illness for several days. Despite the zoo’s staff making every effort to save her life, her gastrointestinal condition worsened, leading to the decision to humanely euthanize her.
Born in 2017 at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Willow quickly became an icon and a joy for thousands of people. Her name was decided through a contest that drew more than 26,000 responses. As a reticulated giraffe, she belonged to a species that reportedly has less than 10,000 representatives living in the wild. As such, her loss is significant not just for the zoo but also for the conservation efforts involving this species.
According to the zoo officials, Willow fell ill several days ago. Her care team noticed something was amiss when she didn’t eat as usual and showed other signs of illness. They quickly got into action, and veterinarians worked on treating and evaluating the gastrointestinal issues that Willow was suffering from.
However, despite all these efforts, her condition worsened rapidly. It was with heavy hearts that officials made the difficult decision to euthanize her humanely before things could get worse.
It is still unclear what caused Willow’s illness and subsequent death. The zoo is conducting a postmortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
This is not the first time that a giraffe has died at the Maryland Zoo. Just over two years ago, another reticulated giraffe, Anuli, unexpectedly died after undergoing treatment for a stomach condition.
Following Willow’s death, the Maryland zoo set up a website to allow her numerous fans to mourn her loss. There is no doubt that she will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her in person and virtually.
Willow, the 6-year-old reticulated giraffe, has left a lasting impression on her caretakers and thousands of people around the world. Her sudden death is not only heartbreaking but also a significant loss to conservation efforts for her species. The Maryland Zoo officials have promised to investigate what caused her death and work harder to ensure such incidents don’t occur in the future.
