The world is always thrilled when an asteroid is about to pass closely to Earth. It’s an opportunity for astronomers to learn more about these celestial bodies and also a chance for the public to witness a spectacular event. Last week, a large asteroid, 2023 DZ2, passed in close proximity to Earth, giving scientists an excellent opportunity to study it.
Now, a newly discovered asteroid labeled as 2023 DZ2 is set to pass safely by Earth on March 24-25, 2023. The asteroid has been classified as a Near Earth Object (NEO) and orbits the sun every 3.16 years. Astronomers at the observatory of La Palma discovered the asteroid in late February 2023.
Current estimates put the size of this asteroid around 210 feet in diameter, making it smaller compared to other asteroids that have recently passed Earth. This particular asteroid belongs to Apollo family of asteroids which orbit the sun.
NASA has been monitoring newly discovered asteroids closely to evaluate if they pose any threat to Earth upon passing by. Luckily, NASA has calculated that this asteroid will pass by our planet at a safe distance of less than half the distance between the Earth and moon’s respective orbits, which is approximately 108,000 miles from the ground.
Experts have confirmed that there is currently no known threat of space objects impacting Earth for at least next hundred years. Still, planetary defense research is ongoing to prevent dangerous asteroids from hitting our planet. One such example is NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission, which was successful in altering the trajectory of a faraway asteroid.
Astronomers at the Goldstone Antenna in California will try to obtain radar images of the passing asteroid between March 23-26. For amateur astronomers, there is a chance to catch a glimpse of the asteroid as it speeds past. The asteroid will be visible in six-inch and larger diameter telescopes. The best time to see the asteroid from the Northern Hemisphere will be early on Friday evening on March 24, 2023.
The passing of newly discovered asteroid 2023 DZ2 is an exciting event for scientists and enthusiasts, presenting an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating celestial bodies. Although it’s not expected to affect Earth, NASA continues to research information and possible ways of mitigating any potential dangers posed by asteroids in the future.
