The state of Iowa, along with at least 15 other states in the Midwest and southern United States, are preparing for severe storms and possible tornadoes expected to hit on Friday. Meteorologists are warning people to brace themselves for dangerous weather conditions, similar to the ones that unleashed a devastating tornado in Mississippi last week, killing at least 21 people. More than 85 million people are under weather advisories, with some areas having high-risk advisories.
Newton, Iowa experienced a tornado in March 2022 that caused extensive damage to the drive-in theater, baseball field, and cemetery. Sadly, tornado sirens did not go off during the event. However, most of the damage has been repaired since then and the sirens are now functioning properly.
Jasper County Emergency Management Office is advising central Iowans to have a plan for their family and build an emergency kit in case of a tornado. It is also important to have a good way to receive emergency information since it can make unpredictable events easier to manage.
A statewide tornado drill was conducted recently and it was reported that all the sirens were functioning as expected. Such drills play an important role in preparing people for possible severe weather conditions.
After experiencing last year’s catastrophic event, Newton is getting prepared again for any possible future events. Many residents are taking extra precautions such as purchasing weather radios to stay informed about potential tornadoes.
Clouds will increase in Iowa later tonight, followed by gusting winds out of the north into tomorrow morning. There will also be a band of snow showers developing over northern Iowa before sunrise. The clouds will decrease and the cold breeze will lighten up, leaving highs around 40°F for the afternoon. The following day may bring more clouds from the south, along with gusty winds up to 30-35 mph at times, and a few rain showers in the morning. There is an expectation of showers and storms across northern/northwest Iowa by Thursday night with temperatures surging above 60°F by late afternoon.
Given the current weather forecast, many residents in Newton are preparing themselves for possible future events by making sure they have an emergency kit ready in case of a tornado. Residents are also advised to stay informed about emergency information so that they can respond appropriately.
In conclusion, with severe weather conditions forecasted for a significant part of the United States, people are taking precautions to keep themselves safe from any possible eventuality. Jasper County Emergency Management Office advises central Iowans to always be prepared for such events and take necessary steps to avoid any damage or injury.
