Barcelona took a major step towards winning their first La Liga title in four years with an impressive 4-0 victory over Elche. Robert Lewandowski scored twice to take his tally to 17 goals this season, while Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres also found the back of the net.
Barcelona dominated the match from start to finish with their swift and clinical attack. They took the lead early on through Lewandowski’s goal in the second minute. The Polish striker scored again in the 54th minute to put Barcelona firmly in control of the game.
Ansu Fati scored his first goal in La Liga since October with a well-placed header, and Ferran Torres added a fourth with a sublime finish past the Elche goalkeeper.
The win extended Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga to 15 points, putting them in a great position to secure their 27th league title. Real Madrid, who are currently second, will look to keep their slim hopes alive when they face Valladolid on Sunday.
Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez was pleased with his team’s performance, especially from players who have not featured much this season. He praised his team for their unity and singled out young defender Eric Garcia for praise after he was given a chance to start in an unfamiliar position.
The win also marked Barcelona’s 20th clean sheet of the season, highlighting their impressive defensive record this season.
In addition to Lewandowski’s brace, both Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres ended their goal droughts, which will come as a big relief for Barcelona fans. With the Copa del Rey semifinal against Real Madrid approaching, Barcelona’s forwards are hitting form at the right time.
Elche, under their new coach Sebastian Beccacece, never really threatened Barcelona and struggled to create any clear-cut chances. The defeat leaves them at the bottom of the table, 14 points from safety.
In other La Liga matches, Sevilla welcomed new coach Jose Luis Mendilibar with a crucial 2-0 win over relegation rivals Cadiz. Lucas Ocampos and Youssef EnNesyri scored for Sevilla.
Elsewhere in Catalonia, Girona secured a 2-1 derby win over Espanyol, while Getafe earned a creditable 0-0 draw away at Athletic Bilbao.
Barcelona’s comprehensive victory over Elche was a clear statement of intent as they continue their pursuit of the La Liga title. With a comfortable lead at the top of the table and their forwards on form, they will now turn their attention to their crucial Copa del Rey semifinal clash against Real Madrid.
