On Tuesday, August 15, the Cincinnati Reds faced off against the Chicago Cubs for a high-stakes baseball game. The stakes were high as Reds have won more baseball games than they have lost during the 2023 Major League Baseball regular season. However, the Cubs proved to be too much of a challenge for them as they scored six times in the seventh inning to secure a victory, ending Reds’ three-game winning streak.
During the game, Luis Cessa gave an excellent performance on the mound, allowing only two runs and four hits over 5⅓ innings. Cessa was rather cromulent in his first outing as a starter and exited having only yielded a lone ER in 5.1 IP. However, the bullpen was a complete and utter disaster on the evening. They struggled due to fatigue from pitching in previous games, allowing the Cubs to tie and take the lead.
Reds’ TJ Friedl was awarded Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game for his homer and running grab in CF. The Reds’ Buck Farmer gave up a double and walks two, allowing Cubs to tie the game initially. Reiver Sanmartin replaced Farmer but walked another batter, allowing the Cubs to take the lead. Patrick Wisdom hit a tworun single, adding to the Cubs’ lead.
Although they fell behind in score towards the end of the game, Reds did not give up without a fight. They hit ten home runs in their first five games and added three more during this game. Reds’ TJ Friedl hit a home run in the second inning and Jason Vosler hit a home run in the fourth inning. Stuart Fairchild also hit a pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning.
Despite the tough loss, Reds are still 32 and above .500. With the hope of winning their second series of the 2023 season, the Reds will play their next game against Cubs tomorrow. Hunter Greene is scheduled to pitch in the next game, and it will be interesting to see how he performs.
Ian Happ of the Cubs had a strong performance during this game as he reached base five out of six consecutive plate appearances. The Cubs finished with 16 hits and no home runs during the game, but Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger went 3 for 5.
In conclusion, although Reds put up a valiant effort with their home runs and Cessa’s masterful pitching, Cubs’ perseverance proved to be stronger in the end. But with Hunter Greene on their side, Reds have a chance to redeem themselves in their upcoming match against Chicago Cubs.
