The Detroit Lions, who have been active in free agency this off-season are looking to acquire a top wide receiver to bolster their offense, and all eyes are on DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins is currently being made available on the trade market by the Arizona Cardinals and could be an ideal fit for a Lions’ team that needs a game-changing talent.
Lions’ need for a Top Receiver
Detroit Lions have shown the desire to add more weapons for quarterback Jared Goff. The recent acquisition of running back Jamaal Williams and receivers Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman demonstrate the franchise’s efforts to bolster the offensive roster. However, they still require a substantial upgrade at wide receiver, which has not been entirely answered with these signings.
The Potential Fit for DeAndre Hopkins
The 29-year-old Hopkins remains one of the top talents in the NFL despite his age, injuries and off-field issues from last season. With Goff’s precision passing skills, Hopkins’ ability to make contested catches and create separation would give the Lions’ offense an instant lift.
The presence of other talented receivers on Detroit’s roster, including AmonRa St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Josh Reynolds, and Kalif Raymond also means that they could provide Hopkins with ample support in the receiving corps. An all-around stronger receiving unit would significantly improve their chances of success this coming season.
Buffalo Bills GM Addresses Rumors
It is not just Detroit linked with Hopkins though, as rumors continue to circulate around several franchises looking to acquire his services. The Buffalo Bills General Manager, Brandon Beane was quick to address speculation that his team is pursuing Hopkins after he was spotted with various Bills gear on social media.
Beane said he was aware of all social media rumors but noted that such stories may not carry any weight regarding the team’s actual intentions. The Bills have made minor moves to address the receiving corps by bringing in Deonte Harty and Trent Sherfield this offseason.
Buffalo’s addition of Harty and Sherfield could make it less likely for the team to bring in another receiver and focus on a different position in the upcoming NFL draft. While Hopkins would indeed be a valuable asset, it’s unclear whether or not Buffalo is in a position to make a play for him.
Dallas Cowboys’ Busy Offseason
The Cowboys have been one of the busiest teams during the free agency period, adding depth at vital positions such as the offensive line and cornerback. Fans around the league wonder if they will go all-in on receiver Hopkins before the next season.
Currently, Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb, who is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, are among the top receivers for Dallas. But with other receivers struggling with injuries recently, speculations have been rampant.
Despite previously being one of the top-paid receivers in the game, Hopkins’ value to any team may depend on their depth chart. On acquiring Hopkins, Dallas would have one of the deepest receiver rooms in the NFL and arguably its top tier.
However, with only weeks remaining before the NFL draft, it is unlikely that any significant move for a veteran star will come before then. Though tension between Hopkins and his current team may continue throughout offseason till June when he will turn 31.
Final Thoughts
Whether Detroit Lions will go all-in on acquiring DeAndre Hopkins or if other teams will pursue him remains uncertain. But one thing is clear – many NFL teams view him as a premier player who can help bring an offensive boost.
Hopkins’s age does raise some doubts, but he clearly still has immense value given his talent and previous production during his ten-year tenure in Houston and Arizona. If he can stay healthy and out of controversies, he can prove to be the missing piece for any team seeking to boost their offensive presence.
