Dillon Brooks, the Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard, is experienced in playing the role of a heel, with numerous rivals on and off the court. From his Stone Cold Steve Austin impersonations to his fierce competitiveness, Brooks is incapable of shying from controversy. With over $250,000 worth of fines for technical fouls and suspensions for flagrant fouls and ejections this season, Brooks’ notorious reputation precedes him.
Brooks’ aggressive playing style has brought him notoriety in recent seasons. He seldom backs down from physical confrontations and routinely challenges opponents on the court. Donovan Mitchell, Russell Westbrook, Draymond Green, Luka Dončić, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are among the high-profile players who have been irritated by Brooks.
Despite attracting a lot of animosity from his peers, Brooks is regarded as one of the NBA’s best perimeter defenders since he’s extremely adept at guarding superstars like LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard. Fortunately for Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, Brooks’ hostile personality can often inspire others to be just as competitive.
Off-court Dillon Brooks can be charming, but his actions have caused irritation among some of his teammates. Nevertheless, his effective leadership abilities have kept him in good standing with Coach Jenkins. Moreover, he’s known for his unconventional fashion sense which parallels his aggressive demeanour.
Brooks’ crusade against the Golden State Warriors, particularly Draymond Green, has raged on for years. During last year’s playoffs against Golden State he injured Gary Payton II’s elbow in a hard foul that resulted in an ejection and one-game suspension.
Due to his infamous public persona as a heel these series became an intense battle between two teams and Brooks became the clear antagonist to Warriors fans. This year, if both the Grizzlies and Warriors make it through their first-round matchups, they may meet in another contentious rematch during the playoffs with Dillon Brooks as the focal point.
Brooks has faced criticism after shooting Memphis out of a couple of games with his impulsive habit of taking unadvisable shots. His struggles to control his rage have been evident on and off the court. When he was a young player, Coach Tony McIntyre spent a great deal of time helping him channel his anger correctly, but Brooks’ edgy approach is now thought of as his ‘superpower’ by McIntyre.
Although Brooks attracts more criticism than accolades, it’s undeniable that he adds an unpredictable edge to every game he plays in. In addition, his ability to get under opponents’ skin always puts opponents on notice. The playoffs will be a real test of his temperament as he strives to prove himself as one of the NBA’s greats while remaining one of the most combative players in the league.
