Eddie Jordan, the former team owner and Formula 1 pundit, has urged Lewis Hamilton to secure his eighth world championship before Max Verstappen surpasses him.
Hamilton equaled Michael Schumacher’s record of seven championships in 2020, and was on track to secure a record-breaking eighth championship in 2021. However, Verstappen won the title controversially. With Mercedes struggling since the introduction of new technical regulations in 2021, the team has only managed one win by George Russell. Jordan believes that Hamilton now faces a race against time to beat Schumacher’s tally.
While Jordan supports Hamilton’s decision to retire, he wants him to have a chance to fight for races if he chooses to continue. “If he can’t win a championship, it’s not worth it,” Jordan said. “But if he’s still got the desire to compete and he can challenge for races, I’d love to see him stay in F1.”
Jordan predicts that Verstappen could win ten world championships due to his young age, skill, and speed. Verstappen won his first championship in 2021 but his second championship in 2022 was signed and sealed with four races to spare. Red Bull Racing’s supremacy has extended into 2023 with Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Perez trading wins and setting themselves up for an intrateam battle for the title.
Despite difficulties for himself and the Mercedes team, Lewis Hamilton remains confident that he will win again in Formula 1. Hamilton holds the record for the most race victories in F1, but Mercedes has had a poor start to the 2023 season due to new technical regulations.
Hamilton emphasizes the importance of remaining positive and tackling issues faced. His teammate, George Russell, stated that Mercedes’ only victory in 2022 led the team down the wrong path. Hamilton was informed that Mercedes’ W14 car would be competitive towards the front of the field, but this has not yet occurred. Nonetheless, Hamilton is hopeful that they will eventually mold the car into a winning one.
Although Jordan projects Verstappen to win another eight world championships, Verstappen has repeatedly said that he does not want to remain on the grid forever and is not interested in breaking records. Verstappen has a contract until 2028 but is focused on other things in life besides F1, citing the increasing number of races per year as physically demanding.
Winning ten world championships in F1 is a long shot for Verstappen and sustaining his motivation could be a challenge. However, with his exceptional talent, it might not be an impossible feat. For now, Eddie Jordan believes that Lewis Hamilton needs to focus on securing his eighth championship before Max Verstappen challenges him for the title.
