Formula 1 Overhauls Sprint Racing Format with Support from Russell and Hamilton

Changes to Sprint Racing Format in Formula 1

Formula 1 is planning to overhaul the sprint racing format, separating it from traditional qualifying and making it a standalone extra race. The grid positions for both the sprint race and Grand Prix will be determined through Friday qualifying sessions. This new approach has received support from George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who believe it will add more excitement to race weekends.

Maxim Verstappen’s Critique of the New Plan

Maxim Verstappen is not entirely supportive of the new plan, but Mercedes drivers, Russell and Hamilton, express openness and trust in Formula 1’s decision-making process. Despite Max’s reservations, he acknowledges that it is important for the sport to evolve and assess what they are doing to make it more engaging for fans.

Stefano Domenicali Discusses Potential Changes to Formula 1

Stefano Domenicali has denied allegations that he wants to eliminate practice sessions. He clarified that practice sessions are necessary for drivers to train and enhance their skills while rookies gain experience. Domenicali has expressed his support for sprint races, suggesting that they could improve the show and engage a larger audience. He also emphasizes the importance of balance between practice time and performance for teams and drivers.

Drivers Support Reduced Practice Sessions during Race Weekends

Drivers suggest reducing the current three free practice sessions down to one or two. They propose following the F2 and F3 practice formats with a single 45-minute free practice session before qualifying. In addition, drivers suggest starting practice sessions later on Friday to minimize time away from home for personnel.

Lewis Hamilton states that F1 can explore different formats, including sprint races, but should be open to other alternative formats as well. The drivers agree that there should be something at stake in every session and one extended practice session can serve that purpose. Formula 1 testing is strictly limited, and one session where teams can experiment is necessary to trial new parts and help develop new cars.

Australian Grand Prix: An Eventful Start to the Season

The Australian Grand Prix kicked off the F1 season in 2022 with an exciting first practice, led by Max Verstappen. The second practice was marked by heavy rain, and Fernando Alonso topped the charts.

The changes to the sprint racing format have generated a lot of attention and support from drivers and fans alike. With the new approach, there will be more excitement in every race weekend. The importance of balance between practice time and performance cannot be ignored, and F1 is looking for ways to reduce time away from home while still maintaining a high-quality standard. F1’s constant evolution has kept it growing and successful, thus necessitating the consideration of new ideas and approaches to keep the sport engaging to its fans worldwide.
