Green Bay Packers Plan for their 2023 Secondary, Including Rasul Douglas and Keisean Nixon

The Green Bay Packers are preparing for the 2023 season, and Head Coach Matt LaFleur recently discussed the team’s plans for their secondary. With an abundance of talent in this key position group, the organization is looking to maximize the potential of its players to create a dynamic defense. Among these players are Rasul Douglas and Keisean Nixon, two athletes being considered for key roles in 2023.

Douglas to Remain at Perimeter Cornerback

Rasul Douglas was a standout player in the second half of last season when he played as an outside cornerback. During the first half of the season, Douglas was primarily utilized as the team’s slot corner, a position that did not suit him as well. Based on his recent performance, the Packers believe that Douglas is best suited for playing on the perimeter.

Despite having experience playing safety, the team will not start him there for the upcoming season. LaFleur made it clear that playing bump and vision on the perimeter is where Douglas is most valuable to the team.

Darnell Savage to Start at Safety

Darnell Savage was one of the top safeties in the league last year and will begin 2023 as a starter at safety. In contrast to Douglas, who has experience playing multiple positions in the secondary, Savage is a proven force at his position.

LaFleur also noted that cornerback Eric Stokes may be injury-prone heading into 2023. The former first-round pick is recovering from an ankle injury but plans to attend offseason programs shortly.

Nixon Could See Action on Offense

The Packers are considering using talented cornerback Keisean Nixon on offense next season, expanding his role beyond special teams and defense. Nixon was a game-changer last year with his dynamic return skills and reliable slot cornerback play.

LaFleur mentioned the possibility of incorporating Nixon into offensive packages to give the team added big-play ability. His unique skill set and speed could result in designed touches on jet sweeps, reverses, and screens that get the ball in his hands.

Adding Nixon to the offensive lineup could also offer numerous misdirection opportunities by drawing defenders’ attention away from Jordan Love, adding another dimension to the Packers’ offense.

Looking Ahead

The Packers’ 2023 secondary has the potential to be one of the most talented units in the league. With players like Douglas, Savage, Stokes, and Nixon, there is great depth within this group. LaFleur and his coaches will undoubtedly draw upon their strengths while working to maximize their playing time for an even more dominant defense.

The upcoming training camp will determine who earns starting roles on this stacked roster. However, with a plan in place moving forward and a versatile group of athletes who can perform in several positions, it’s clear that the Green Bay Packers are serious about their defensive game plan for the upcoming season.
