It was the much-anticipated Western Conference playoff series between top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers and eighth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers started their postseason journey with a bang, defeating the Grizzlies 128-112 in Game 1 on Sunday.
Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves were instrumental in securing the win for the defending champions. Hachimura scored a career-high 29 points, including 21 in the second half. Reaves contributed 23 points, including nine in the closing minutes to help the Lakers pull away from Memphis. LeBron James added 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Anthony Davis had 22 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lakers took control of the game in the second half with a dominant performance. They went on a 15-0 run to cap off a dominant period where they outscored the Grizzlies by 15 points. The momentum carried into the fourth quarter as they maintained their lead over Memphis.
After a brief injury scare, Anthony Davis returned strong after halftime from an apparent shoulder injury. He showed no signs of discomfort as he led his team to victory.
The storyline of the game shifted towards Memphis’ star point guard Ja Morant towards the end of the contest. Morant left with an injury to his right hand and wrist wrapped in the fourth quarter after running into Anthony Davis as he drove to the basket. X-rays on Morant’s wrist were negative, but his status for Game 2 remains unclear. He had scored 18 points in 30 minutes before leaving.
The Lakers showcased their three-point shooting in the playoff opener, shooting an impressive 16 of 37 (43.2%) from beyond the arc. This performance was a vast improvement over their struggles from beyond the arc during the regular season.
Los Angeles also prevailed in other crucial areas, winning the rebounding margin 45-34 and blocking 11 Grizzlies shots to just two from Memphis. Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 31 points, while Desmond Bane added 22.
The Lakers missed the playoffs last year and were eliminated in the first round by Phoenix Suns a year earlier. They acquired Hachimura in a mid-season trade from the Washington Wizards, hoping he would play a pivotal role in their journey towards redemption this postseason.
If Morant misses any games with his current injury, Memphis will have to revert back to the formula that led to a 6-3 record while Morant was suspended in March. Tyus Jones would replace Morant in the starting guard spot with more playing time for Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, and David Roddy.
The Lakers have taken home-court advantage and will look to continue their march towards another NBA championship as they prepare for Game 2 in Memphis on Wednesday. The series promises to be an exciting one as both teams battle for supremacy in the Western Conference.
