The Boston Marathon is one of the most prestigious marathons in the world, and local running groups are gearing up for the 125th edition, scheduled to be held on Monday, Patriots’ Day.
For reporter Matt Reed, the hype around running marathons wasn’t something he initially understood. Nevertheless, he decided to take on the challenge of participating in this year’s marathon. He started his intense training despite his busy work schedule and responsibility as a parent.
Reed found consistent training for the marathon to be challenging, especially after he suffered an injury that required him to cram the 20-week training program into just six weeks. This setback left him feeling uncertain about his ability to complete the marathon, and he even considered quitting altogether.
However, Reed persevered with his training and has found running beneficial not only for his physical health but also for his mental well-being. He is now set to run for the “Miles for Miracles” team, which raises funds for Boston Children’s Hospital.
Several local running groups have been working tirelessly to prepare their runners for this year’s marathon. For instance, 4RUN3 store located in East Longmeadow has a marathon training group that consists of about ten runners who will participate in the event.
The runners have been preparing for around 15-17 weeks and have experienced different kinds of weather conditions while training, including rain, snow, sleet, and even 80-degree temperatures. The training group plans to have around 40 volunteers posted along the route; some will stand at aid stations in Natick to provide hydration and nutrition support to runners.
The Boston Athletics Association (BAA) has also paid special attention to security during this year’s event considering that it marks ten years since the Boston Marathon bombing. Nevertheless, volunteers and organizers have managed security effectively.
For Jim Musante, a marathon veteran, this year’s marathon marks his 43rd consecutive Boston Marathon. He has been training hard, although he faces a challenge as he is scheduled to undergo double hernia surgery directly after the marathon.
Despite the impending operation, Musante is looking forward to race day and is expected to perform at his highest level yet. Along with two other runners from Southeast Volusia who are also running the Boston Marathon, they will try to avoid getting caught up in the crowd and maintain a realistic pace throughout the race.
Musante’s wife Kitty is another time Boston Marathon participant and will be participating in the prerace weekend’s Boston Marathon 5k. The couple has become an inspiration for many local runners.
Several other local runners have also been preparing for this year’s marathon, hoping to achieve their personal bests while supporting good causes.
In conclusion, the 125th Boston Marathon is poised to be another exciting event where runners from all over the world compete with great zeal. For local runners who have overcome many obstacles to prepare for this challenging event, it will be a memorable experience that they will cherish for a long time.
