Michael Masi Makes Controversial Return to Formula 1 Paddock

Michael Masi’s Comeback to F1 Paddock after Being Removed from His Role

Former race director of the Formula One (F1) championship, Michael Masi has made a controversial return to the F1 paddock. The Australian Grand Prix event marked his comeback after being removed from his role following his handling of the 2021 season decider in Abu Dhabi. Masi’s decisions during the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix included micromanaging the safety car that allowed Max Verstappen to overtake Lewis Hamilton on the final lap and win the title.

Ted Kravitz Criticizes Masi’s Return to the F1 Paddock

Not everyone welcomed Masi’s presence in the paddock. Renowned broadcast journalist Ted Kravitz criticized his return and questioned why he was even present in Melbourne. Kravitz pointed out that Masi left the FIA after ruining Hamilton’s legacy with his poor officiating in Abu Dhabi, and he had no business being there. Reports suggest that F1 wanted Masi back to assist Niels Wittich on FIA race direction, but it would not happen.

Hamilton’s Reaction to Masi’s Return

Hamilton still reportedly harbours bitterness towards what happened at Abu Dhabi and has refused to speak to Masi since then. The seven-time world champion was leading the race when Masi sped up the process of ending a safety car period. This decision meant the championship was decided under racing conditions, which Verstappen won due to Masi’s botched handling of the safety car period.

Verstappen on Pole Position for Australian Grand Prix

As for this year’s Australian Grand Prix, it is Verstappen who starts at pole position, with Hamilton starting behind him in second place.

Masi Denies Ruining Hamilton’s Legacy

In response to criticism, Masi denied that he had ruined Hamilton’s legacy. He acknowledged the opinions of those who claimed otherwise and respected their views. Masi also revealed that he would be willing to discuss the matter with Hamilton if approached, but the seven-time world champion has expressed no interest in such a conversation.

Masi’s New Role as Chairman of Supercars Commission

Since leaving the FIA, Masi has taken up a new role as chairman of the Supercars Commission. He experienced a period of mental health issues induced by death threats following the Abu Dhabi incident but has since taken time for self-care and sought professional help.

In conclusion, Michael Masi’s controversial return to the F1 paddock has sparked mixed reactions from various stakeholders. While some are critical of his presence, others believe he can contribute positively to the sport in his new role. However, it remains to be seen whether Masi will ever get a chance to redeem himself in Hamilton’s eyes after the events of Abu Dhabi.
