Mike Brown and Joe Mazzulla Named Finalists for NBA Coach of the Year

Mike Brown’s Coaching and Success with the Sacramento Kings

Mike Brown spent six seasons as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and was known for his ultra-meticulous nature. However, after being fired from his position, Brown was left without a team until he received a call from the Sacramento Kings. The Kings needed a new coach who could change their culture and lead them to the playoffs after a long drought. The team owner Vivek Ranadive revealed that he believed Mike Brown was the perfect fit for the job during their initial interview.

Ranadive got involved in the hiring process and had a six-hour dinner with Brown. During this dinner, Ranadive told Brown that he expected honesty and love in the organization, and they have operated on that premise since then. In less than 10 months, Brown was able to revive the Sacramento Kings and bring them to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Brown’s growth as a coach was mostly attributed to his experience in the Bay Area, including his time with the Warriors and his relationship with Saint Mary’s College coach Randy Bennett. This experience allowed him to introduce a three-step plan to ensure the success of the franchise. Additionally, before he arrived, the belief process was instilled in the team through team building exercises and celebrating small victories.

The Kings finished with a 48-34 record, their best since 2005, and Brown is currently considered to be one of the leading candidates for winning the coveted NBA Coach of the Year award. Brown attributes his success to his experiences with Joe Lacob, Bob Myers, Steve Kerr, and players on the Warriors. Now Brown’s next challenge is to prepare the Kings to face his former squad, the Warriors, in a first-round series amid all chatter about their lack of experience.

Joe Mazzulla Named One of the Three Finalists for NBA Coach of the Year

Joe Mazzulla sat on the second row of the Boston Celtics bench last season, and Ime Udoka was suspended for the 2022-23 season. So, Mazzulla took on the role of head coach and guided the Celtics to a 57-25 regular-season record and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. As a result, Mazzulla was named one of the three finalists for NBA Coach Of the Year along with Mike Brown and Mark Daigneault.

Mazzulla credited his success to the organization’s foundation for success, process, history, tradition, staff, and players. Hawks coach Quin Snyder praised Mazzulla’s coaching abilities and thoughtful approach to the game. They also formed a friendship thanks to Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens connecting them.

Mike Brown’s Role in Changing Culture and Guiding Sacramento Kings to Playoffs After Long Drought

For over 17 years, fans of the Sacramento Kings had been waiting for their team to make it back to the playoffs. Finally, that drought was ended, when Mike Brown coached the Kings to a 48-34 record in his first season and secured the Western Conference’s No. 3 seed.

Brown is known for being very methodical, detail-oriented, a culture guy who can hold players accountable while giving them love and making them feel supported. When Ranadive hired him, he knew that Brown could change their culture so that they could be successful again. Brown’s next challenge is now preparing the Kings to face his former squad, the Warriors, in a first-round series amid all chatter about their lack of experience.

In conclusion, both Mike Brown and Joe Mazzulla have been named as finalists for NBA Coach of the Year award. While Brown has achieved great success in revitalizing the Sacramento Kings culture and guiding them to the playoffs after a long drought, Mazzulla has shown his incredible coaching abilities by leading the Boston Celtics to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference this season. The NBA community eagerly awaits the announcement of the final award recipient.
