The 2023 NFL draft is less than a month away and draft coverage is increasing quickly. Jordan Reid, formerly of The Draft Network and currently of ESPN, recently put out a full 7-round mock draft for the New York Giants. It’s always interesting to see what experts predict for each team, and Reid’s mock draft provides insight into what the Giants’ 2023 cohort could look like.
The Giants have committed to adding passcatchers around their quarterback, Daniel Jones. Based on this strategy, Reid suggests Zay Flowers, a dynamic athlete and natural separator would be an explosive addition to the Giants’ offense. The team has been struggling with interceptions in the previous season, and Emmanuel Forbes, with great ball skills and proven track record would address this concern effectively. Additionally, Olusegun Oluwatimi, a smart and versatile center could be a Day 1 starter for the Giants.
Reid suggests that the Giants may have to look beyond traditional thresholds for skillsets that fit their team vision. This means stretching beyond ideal height or weight limits to secure players that offer unique strengths to contribute to their team. Most of the Day 3 picks focus on the defensive draft, with the exception of Chase Brown from Illinois who stands out as a favorite pick.
The Jets, Eagles, and Giants will all make positional variety draft picks. The Eagles will strengthen their defensive line by drafting Edge from Georgia. The Giants will add passcatchers to their team by drafting WR from Boston College and CB from Mississippi State. Simultaneously, the Jets will focus on improving their offensive line to protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers by drafting OT from Ohio State.
When it comes to drafting NFL players, selecting them based on their value and impact is vital. NFL teams have a salary cap on player spending, including rich teams. Therefore, GMs require a strategy to manipulate the cap with accounting gimmicks while still meeting team expectations.
The MasseyThaler chart shows that the highest draft picks are vastly overvalued compared to those late in the first round and early in the second round. QB is also the most valuable position in the NFL, with highvalue QBs being found near the top of the draft. A case can also be made for drafting an offensive tackle, edge rusher, interior defensive lineman, cornerback, or wide receiver near the top of the draft as well.
Interestingly, the Giants are in an almost ideal position from a surplus value standpoint in the upcoming 2023 draft. This means they can select picks that offer greater value than comparable options further up the list. As a result, they have greater flexibility when it comes to making choices based on what positions need strengthening most urgently.
To sum it up, Jordan Reid’s mock draft provides excellent insight into what Giants fans can expect from their team during this year’s NFL draft. The need for adding strong pass catchers around Daniel Jones is evident while looking beyond traditional thresholds will enable them to create a unique and dynamic team. Their ideal position in terms of pick values gives Giants ample opportunity to strengthen their weak areas while selecting players who will offer maximum value to their team’s success.
