A baseball game between Ole Miss Rebels and Southern Miss Golden Eagles was called off in the bottom of the fourth inning due to poor field conditions at Trustmark Park. Despite Southern Miss leading with 21, the umpires made the unanimous decision to cancel the match in the interest of player safety.
The game was stopped due to unsafe playing conditions caused by newly-laid sod on the infield that hadn’t taken well. The groundskeepers appeared a few times to fiddle with the turf on the first-base line, which led to visible problems throughout the game. Following an incident where a player stumbled trying to retrieve a ball, it became clear that the ground crew’s efforts were insufficient.
The coaches of both teams expressed disappointment at not being able to play, but stated that player safety is always the top priority. Resodding of the field had only been done recently, and with it having not taken properly and causing players to slip throughout the game, both teams met with umpires and officials for discussions around what should be done.
The game will not be rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts with both schools – this means that there is no clear victory for either side. Ole Miss left the field trailing, having scored only one run as opposed to Southern Miss’s 21 – however, they will not register a loss as a result of the game being called off mid-play.
Fans will be able to exchange their tickets from this unscheduled and uncompleted game for two tickets each for any 2023 Mississippi Braves game this season. While this offers some recompense for fans who may have missed out on a full game, it’s still a bitter pill to swallow for both teams and their supporters.
This isn’t the first time that front-line sports have been cut short due to unplayable conditions. Although it’s frustrating for teams, officials and spectators alike, interruptions like this serve as a reminder that safety always needs to come first. Injuries sustained as a result of playing on unsafe fields cannot only be career-ending for athletes but also bring significant financial implications for teams if they are sued.
As such, Ole Miss and Southern Miss made the difficult – but ultimately correct – decision to call off the game early in order to ensure that players could get back onto safe ground as soon as possible. The field will now need to undergo further work before it can be deemed safe for players once more.
It seems that despite the best intentions of the Trustmark Park crew, the resodding of the infield ultimately led to their baseball match being cut short early on 17th March. While none are pleased at the turn of events, it’s essential that safety remains paramount in top-level sports. With any luck, the good news should emerge later in future seasons that play can resume without such drama.
