Paul Scholes backs Scott McTominay to replace Casemiro during his suspension period

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that Scott McTominay should be the “perfect choice” to replace Casemiro in Manchester United’s starting eleven during his suspension period. The Brazilian received a four-match ban after his red card against Southampton last month, leaving a void in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield.

McTominay’s International Break Heroics

Scholes is impressed with McTominay’s performance during the international break for Scotland, where he scored four goals in two games against Cyprus and Spain. He hopes that McTominay will carry this form into Manchester United’s upcoming matches, starting with their Premier League clash against Newcastle on Sunday. “If McTominay can come into the team and make it look as if Casemiro isn’t missed, then, hopefully, he will still be with us,” said Scholes.

Uncertain Future for McTominay at Manchester United

However, despite the praise from Scholes, McTominay’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain. Newcastle showed interest in him during the January transfer window, and his situation is expected to be reevaluated in the summer. While United sources insist he has an important role to play for the rest of the season, he has only made 13 starts in all competitions under Solskjaer this season and faces competition from other midfielders.

McTominay Has a Decision to Make

McTominay is under contract until 2025, but he must weigh up whether he will get enough playing time in the future. United manager Solskjaer sees him as a midfielder, but prefers other options such as on-loan Marcel Sabitzer, Christian Eriksen, and Fred. McTominay has played as a striker for United’s academy and has scored twice from midfield this season. His versatility may work in his favor, as Solskjaer looks to accommodate him in the team.

The Importance of McTominay for Manchester United

Scholes hopes that McTominay will stay with the club and sees the upcoming matches as a big chance for him to prove himself. With Casemiro unavailable for domestic fixtures against Nottingham Forest, Brentford, and Everton, McTominay’s role in the team will be crucial. Christian Eriksen is already unavailable due to injury, limiting United’s midfield options. Scholes believes that McTominay is the perfect candidate to replace Casemiro and build on his international break heroics. “He’s been undervalued before because of the McTominay-Fred partnership, but he’s a top-class player,” added Scholes.

Contract Talks with Rashford and De Gea

In other news related to Manchester United, Solskjaer expressed hope that contract talks with Marcus Rashford and goalkeeper David de Gea will end positively after Luke Shaw agreed to new terms. He also said that star forward Marcus Rashford is set to play against Newcastle, while Anthony Martial could return to the squad. The upcoming matches will be crucial for Manchester United as they look to secure Champions League football next season.
