The Phoenix Suns’ playoff journey got off to a tough start as they suffered a 113-103 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series. The Suns were unable to contain Kawhi Leonard, who posted a game-high 38 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Despite Kevin Durant’s impressive 27-point performance, the Suns couldn’t overcome their late-game struggles.
The Suns had a slow start in the first quarter, but they managed to bounce back in the second and third quarters, with Durant leading the charge. However, the Clippers’ three-point shooting late in the fourth quarter proved to be too much for the Suns to handle. They were outscored 36-21 in the final period.
Leonard was undoubtedly the best player on the court, showcasing his ability to score from all areas. The Clippers were also missing All-Star Paul George due to a sprained knee, but Westbrook’s intangibles played an important role in securing their win, despite his poor shooting night.
Craig played an excellent game for the Suns, knocking down shots and being aggressive on the defensive side while moving the ball well. However, the Suns need more contributions from their bench players. They can benefit from being more aggressive, making quick decisions, boxing out to get to the glass and push the pace.
If Leonard continues to outplay Durant and gets help from Westbrook and others on the team, the Clippers have a good chance of upsetting the Suns in this series. On the other hand, chemistry and being on the same page with his team matters to Durant, and the Suns are unbeaten when he plays. The Suns have a talented roster with Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Durant, who averaged 26 points per game in his eight regular-season games with the Suns.
The Suns’ defense was good during the end of the second quarter and start of the third quarter, but they need to maintain it for all four quarters if they want to beat a team as talented as the Clippers. The Clippers’ offensive rebounds, particularly by Russell Westbrook, led to extra possessions and points.
The Suns need not overreact to this loss and must go back to the drawing board. They hope that center Bismack Biyombo and guard Cameron Payne can play in Game 1 against the Clippers. The Suns are back in the playoffs after a humiliating loss to the Dallas Mavericks in last season’s Western Conference semifinals.
In conclusion, it was a tough loss for the Suns in Game 1 of their series against the Clippers. The outcome of this series might very well depend on how individual players perform. However, teamwork will be key in winning, and players cannot afford to let complacency set in if they want to go deep into this year’s playoffs.
