Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III is reportedly in talks to become a minority owner of the Washington Commanders, as bids to purchase the team are being reviewed. The team’s current owner, Daniel Snyder, has been under scrutiny for various issues surrounding the organization, and two bids have been submitted to meet his minimum asking price of $6 billion. Among those bidders is a group led by Josh Harris, which includes Mitchell Rales and Magic Johnson.
RGIII’s Desire to Return to Washington
Griffin, who led the Commanders (formerly known as the Redskins) to the playoffs in his first season in 2012, was released after four seasons. Despite this, he has expressed his desire to return to the team and help build a winning organization for the fans. The former quarterback previously talked about getting investors and fans involved in purchasing the team and has mentioned having great conversations with Harris’ group.
Full-Circle Moment for Griffin
If Griffin does become part of the ownership group, it would be a full-circle moment for him. He did not have the career he hoped for with Washington, but believes coming back to help the team win would be a rewarding experience. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that it would be an amazing opportunity,” Griffin said. “To have that team come back around full circle and [to] be able to help them go on another Super Bowl run would be special.”
Fans Ready for Change
Griffin also believes that this change in ownership is necessary for the team and its fans. Many have called for Snyder to sell the team due to controversies involving sexual harassment allegations within the organization. “I do believe that once Dan Snyder sells this team, which we all know is going to happen at some point, [the fans are] going to celebrate like they won the Super Bowl,” Griffin said.
The Investigation and New Ownership
Both the Commanders and Snyder are currently under investigation by former U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White for various aspects of the organization, adding to the pressure for Snyder to sell. Griffin believes that new ownership will help restore some luster to the Washington football team. “There’s no doubt that new ownership would bring in some fresh air, fresh life into the organization,” he said.
Despite his desire to be part of the Commanders’ new ownership group, this is not Griffin’s first attempt at rejoining the team. He previously attempted to get re-signed by Washington and even wrote a book about his career and time with the team that failed to gain traction. However, joining Harris’ bid for the team would give him a unique opportunity to be involved in shaping its future.
In conclusion, there are still many unknowns regarding RGIII’s potential minority ownership in the Washington Commanders. However, what is clear is his excitement for potentially being part of a new era for the team, one that could bring winning seasons and renewed energy to the fans who have been waiting for change.
