On March 30th, 2023, Mason Englert, a righthanded reliever and a Rule 5 draft pick, made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers against the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite giving up a home run to his first batter, he retired the next three batters and received praise from Tigers’ manager A.J. Hinch for his accomplishment.
Englert was selected by the Tigers in the Rule 5 draft in 2022 with the sixth overall pick. Before joining the Tigers, he played for the RoughRiders and made his DoubleA debut on September 2nd. In game one of the 2022 Texas League Championship Series, Englert threw 5.1 innings in his start and allowed only one run on three hits.
Englert has been open about his struggles with mental health issues that affected his on-field performance in the past. However, through seeking help and improving his mental health, he showed dominance during spring training with a 2.25 ERA, two walks, and fourteen strikeouts in twelve innings.
As a rookie pitcher navigating a new environment and high pressures of performing in the big leagues, Englert experiences anxiety at times. However, he practices mindfulness techniques to combat this and remains focused on his goals.
The Tigers have had success with Rule 5 picks in the past, with only one failing to make it through the season. As an active player on their roster, Englert must remain with them for the entire season or be offered back to his old club.
Although Englert views himself as a starting pitcher and throws four pitches, the Tigers are currently using him as a multi-inning reliever due to his Rule 5 status. This means that he will have to adjust and adapt to different roles throughout the season.
Infielder Tyler Nevin started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo for a left oblique strain. In his second rehab game, he homered and played well. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop is not in the starting lineup for some games due to a platoon role strategy.
Mason Englert’s MLB debut is a significant milestone in his career as a professional baseball player. Despite an early setback, he showed resilience and determination by retiring the next three batters. With the Tigers’ support and guidance, he will continue to develop and improve throughout the season.
