The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has announced its 2023 class, and it is filled with basketball royalty. Among the six basketball legends who will be inducted into the hallowed halls of the Springfield, Massachusetts museum are former NBA stars Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol, and Tony Parker, WNBA legend Becky Hammon, and NBA coach Gregg Popovich.
Dwyane Wade is one of the best shooting guards in NBA history. Over his 16-year career, he won three championships with the Miami Heat and was named Finals MVP in 2006. He was also a 13-time All-Star and averaged 22 points per game for his career. He retired from the NBA in 2019 and now serves as an analyst for TNT.
Dirk Nowitzki spent his entire 21-year career with the Dallas Mavericks and led them to their lone NBA title in 2011. He was named Finals MVP that year and finished his career as a 14-time All-Star. The German-born power forward is widely considered one of the greatest international players to ever play in the NBA.
Pau Gasol’s nearly two-decade-long career included stops in Memphis, L.A., Chicago, San Antonio, and Milwaukee. He won two titles in L.A. alongside Kobe Bryant and was also a twotime champion with Spain’s national team at the FIBA World Cup. Gasol was a six-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA selection.
Tony Parker played under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio for 17 seasons and won four championships with the Spurs. He was named Finals MVP in 2007 and was a six-time All-Star. The French point guard finished his career with the Charlotte Hornets, retiring in 2019.
Becky Hammon is a pioneer in basketball coaching. She served as an assistant under Popovich from 2014-22 before becoming the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA. She is the first woman to serve as a head coach in an NBA preseason, regular-season, or postseason game. Hammon was also a six-time All-Star in her playing days, leading the league in assists in 2007.
Gregg Popovich is one of the greatest coaches in NBA history. He is the NBA’s all-time winningest coach with five championships and a gold medal after serving as the head coach for Team USA at the 2020 Olympics. Popovich has led the San Antonio Spurs for over 20 years and has found plenty of postseason success along the way.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony is scheduled for August 12, 2023, in Springfield, Massachusetts. The full class announcement is expected during the NCAA Final Four earlier that year. In addition to these six basketball legends, there will be other individuals added to various categories, including players from other levels of basketball and coaches at all levels of play.
In conclusion, this class of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame members represents some of the greatest players and coaches who have ever been part of the game. They have left their mark on basketball history and will forever be remembered for their contributions to the sport. Congratulations to Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker, Becky Hammon, and Gregg Popovich on this well-deserved honor.
