Tammy Abraham Open to Return to Chelsea as Striker Hunt Continues

Tammy Abraham, who moved from Chelsea to Roma for £34m in 2020, has not ruled out the possibility of a return to Stamford Bridge. The 25-year-old striker believes being linked with other teams is motivating for him and not distracting. Abraham has an €80m (£68m) buyback clause in his contract that could allow his former club to bring him back this summer.

Abraham’s Career So Far

Abraham came through the youth ranks at Chelsea and scored 30 goals in 82 appearances before being loaned out to Bristol City, where he scored 26 goals in 48 appearances. He then joined Swansea City on loan and scored five goals in 31 appearances. After returning to Chelsea, Abraham found first-team opportunities under Frank Lampard but struggled under Thomas Tuchel.

Successful Spell at Roma

Abraham’s move to Serie A outfit Roma has been quite successful. During his first season in Italy, he scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 34 appearances. His prolific goal-scoring was instrumental in helping Roma win the Europa Conference League last season, scoring nine goals in the competition alone. However, during his current season, Abraham has only scored six league goals and one goal in nine European games.

Mourinho’s Role

José Mourinho played a crucial role in signing Tammy Abraham for Roma, calling him personally and organizing the £34m move in August last year. However, after Mourinho left Roma, reports suggest that there are chances that Roma could let go of Abraham this summer.

Striking Options for Chelsea

Chelsea’s quest for a striker continues after failing to fill the void left by Diego Costa’s departure following their Premier League triumph in 2017. Despite signing Timo Werner and Kai Havertz last summer, their goalscoring ability has not been enough this season. Chelsea is currently in the market for a striker, and Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane have been touted as potential options.

Potter’s Appointment Could Benefit Abraham

Chelsea’s recent appointment of Graham Potter as their manager could help bring Tammy Abraham back to Stamford Bridge. Potter has a track record of successfully developing young talent at Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Arsenal Keeping Tabs on Abraham

Besides Chelsea, Arsenal has also reportedly shown an interest in Abraham. The striker revealed in an interview that his family were massive Arsenal fans, and considered a move to The Emirates before leaving Chelsea.

Mourinho Demanding Replacement for Abraham

Abraham’s form has dried up this season, which led to current Roma boss José Mourinho demanding that they bring in three new players this summer, including a replacement striker for Abraham.

Conclusion:

Tammy Abraham’s future remains uncertain, but a return to Chelsea is not impossible. With Chelsea struggling to find a reliable goal scorer since the departure of Diego Costa, Abraham could represent a cheaper alternative for the Blues. Also, Graham Potter’s appointment as Chelsea manager could be an added incentive for Abraham to make his way back to Stamford Bridge.
