The Boston Red Sox’s Opening Day Roster and Player Positions for the 2023 Season

The New Power First Baseman

The Boston Red Sox has lacked a power first baseman for a few years now, but it looks like they have finally found one in Tristan Casas. The 22-year-old has been impressive in his minor league career and was ranked as the team’s number one prospect before the 2021 season. He continued to showcase his talent during Spring Training this year, hitting .361 with two home runs and six RBI’s in 18 games.

Moving Forward in the Outfield

The Red Sox have a new look in their outfield this season. With Kyle Schwarber taking over as the primary right fielder and Alex Verdugo starting in center field, they will be a formidable duo that brings speed, power and athleticism to the game. Verdugo was exceptional in his first year with the team last season, finishing with a .308 batting average, six home runs and 15 RBI’s. Meanwhile, Schwarber’s offensive firepower is expected to bolster the team’s lineup.

Changes to the Infield

The Red Sox dealt with some injury concerns early on this season in their infield, but they managed to find solutions. Enrique Hernandez has been filling in as interim shortstop until Trevor Story is able to return from injury. Hernandez is an extremely versatile player who can play multiple positions effectively, but he has big shoes to fill while Story is out of commission. Meanwhile, Rafael Devers continues to thrive in his role at third base and has cemented his status as a franchise cornerstone.

Behind the Plate

Kevin Plawecki will likely get the nod as the starting catcher for opening day. Plawecki has been solid defensively and has shown flashes of offensive prowess throughout his career, including two home runs this Spring Training.

Pitching Ahead

Boston’s pitching staff is looking strong this season, with Chris Sale returning to the active roster for the first time since 2019. Sale will be joined by electric fireballer Tanner Houck, who has been impressive in his short career thus far. Although Houck projects as a solid starter, his future and real value might be in the bullpen. Adam Ottavino is still one of the best closers in baseball, having saved seven games last season. Meanwhile, Matt Barnes is the lone left-handed reliever in the bullpen but could be used in high-leverage situations.

Alex Cora’s Confidence

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has expressed confidence that his team is ready to compete this season. Despite an underwhelming performance in 2021, he believes that they will be a force to be reckoned with this year.

In conclusion, the Boston Red Sox have made significant changes and additions to their team ahead of the 2023 opening day roster. With power-first baseman Tristan Casas leading the offensive charge and the new-look outfield of Kyle Schwarber and Alex Verdugo impressing fans, this year promises to be an exciting one for Red Sox fans. Meanwhile, Hernandez will stand-in at shortstop until Trevor Story makes his eventual return while Rafael Devers continues to shine as the face of the franchise at third base. Expect big things from Boston’s pitching staff in addition to standout performances from Kevin Plawecki behind the plate.
