The Clásico Tapatío holds great significance for former Atlas defender Mario Méndez and his family

Separated by Loyalties

The Clásico Tapatío between Atlas and Chivas is undoubtedly one of the most significant local derbies in Mexico. But, the match has more importance to Mario Méndez and his family. As a former Atlas defender, Méndez’s love for the club has always been unbreakable. However, he is not the only footballer from his family as his grandfather, father, uncle and brother have played for Chivas.

Méndez’s fondness for Atlas came to fruition when he joined the youth academy at a young age. He always lived the Clásico Tapatío to the fullest and recalls being taunted by Chivas fans whenever Atlas emerged victorious.

Intense Rivalry

The rivalry between Atlas and Chivas has always been ferocious and losing or winning holds great significance for both sides. While older generations of Méndez’s family are passionate supporters of Chivas, the younger generation, including Méndez himself, bleed red and black.

Even though Méndez’s family is divided in their support for each team – they maintain that their rivalry is only sporting. When a team loses, they expect the taunting to start.

Playing for both sides

Méndez remains loyal to Atlas but would not rule out playing for Chivas or any other team that provides economic and professional stability if it suits all parties involved. He respects players’ decisions on retirement, such as Huesos Reyes not wanting to play for Chivas anymore. According to Méndez, professional stability and extending their careers should be the priority for everyone.

Predictions for Atlas vs Guadalajara

Atlas is playing at home against Guadalajara in their upcoming match in the Liga MX, and it will be a vital game for the Atlas’s chances of entering the playoffs. Atlas has recently been in good form, and their last victory against Puebla was their best performance this season.

Guadalajara has already got one foot in the playoffs, but they need to improve their performances. Despite the fact that they have been better than Atlas this season, predictions for the match are difficult to make as it has all the makings of a draw.

Upcoming Clásico Tapatío match

The Jalisco stadium will host another edition of the Clásico Tapatío between Atlas and Chivas on Saturday, April 1 at 11:10 pm ET/ 8:10 pm PT. The upcoming game holds great significance for both teams.

While Atlas has only managed to win one game this season and is currently ranked 12th but has recently progressed to the quarterfinals of the Concachampions, Chivas had seven games unbeaten before losing their last two matches.

However, Guzmán, Chivas’ captain and top scorer with five goals and two assists, will not play due to a red card he received in the previous match. History is in favor of Chivas, who have won 92 times out of 233 times they have played against Atlas.

In conclusion, the Clásico Tapatío may just be another local derby for many people but former Atlas defender Mario Méndez understands its significance all too well. Despite his unwavering love for Atlas, he is aware of his family’s deep-rooted connection with Chivas. As both sides prepare for their forthcoming Liga MX matches, predicting outcomes remains an elusive task.
