The Utah State women’s tennis team faced a tough loss against San Diego State on 2 April, losing by a score of 4-0. In their Mountain West (MW) match, the Aggies tried their best to fight for the doubles point, but the Aztecs outscored them to take the point.
Redshirt senior Sidnee Lavatai and senior Lucy Octave won their court two doubles match in a 6-3 victory for Utah State. However, graduate student Lisa Küng and junior Naz Ozturk lost at the No. 1 doubles spot in a 7-5 loss, which gave San Diego State the doubles point.
In singles play, Naz Ozturk won the first set at the No. 1 singles spot, but her match was left unfinished in the second set as San Diego State secured their fourth point. On court five, a graduate student won the second set after losing the first, but her match was also suspended before the third set began.
Utah State’s record now is 5-8 overall and 0-4 in MW play. Their next match will be against UNLV in Boise, Idaho.
Meanwhile, the San Diego State women’s tennis team had faced Air Force before Utah State and managed to secure three singles matches to win by a score of 4-3.
Detkovskaya and Melosch won on court two in doubles play, but Air Force won on courts one and three to take the doubles point. In singles play, SDSU used the same lineup that won against New Mexico. Detkovskaya and Skrobonja won their matches, putting SDSU up 2-1. Melosch and Velcea lost their matches, putting Air Force up 3-2. Azziz and Morin battled for the match win and took their matches to a third set. Azziz won her match, evening the match at 3-3, with one match left.
San Diego State is currently ranked 50th nationally in the latest ITA rankings. The Aztecs have won four matches against teams ranked in the ITA rankings this season by an identical scoreline of 4-3. Head coach has earned his 400th career victory this spring, and two Aztecs players have been named Mountain West women’s tennis players of the week.
Skrobonja has a 5-1 record in doubles play and a 9-4 record in singles play this season. Meanwhile, Detkovskaya has a 10-1 record in singles play and has beaten three power five programs’ individuals.
Looking ahead, San Diego State will hit the road again to take on Utah State and Boise State this weekend in Idaho.
