The Atlanta Falcons are making significant moves to upgrade their defense ahead of the 2022 NFL season. The latest addition to the team is former Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell, who signed a one-year deal with the Falcons. With Campbell’s signing, the Falcons bring in a valuable veteran presence and an additional pass-rushing option to complement Grady Jarrett.
The Falcons have been busy making additions to their defensive front since their disappointing 7-10 season ended, and Campbell’s signing is the latest move towards improving their roster. Earlier, they had already made changes by replacing last season’s defensive coordinator with Ryan Nielsen.
In addition to Campbell, the Falcons have also signed other players like David Onyemata and Kaden Elliss, boosting their pass-rushing group.
Campbell’s performance for the Ravens last year was impressive as he collected 5.5 sacks. These numbers would have ranked second on the Falcons in 2022 and would have led the team in 2021. The Ravens’ decision to cut him created a chance for the Falcons to sign him at a lower cost.
Campbell is known for his excellence on and off the field. He has been awarded the Art Rooney Sportsmanship award and named Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2019. Additionally, he is the oldest active player in the NFL defensive lineman segment.
According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, multiple teams like Jets, Bills, Jaguars pursued Campbell. However, he decided to sign with Falcons over them despite insisting that he was not motivated by money but playing for legacy and championships.
The Falcons’ general manager Terry Fontenot believes that teams win games more than individuals do. The signing of 11 free agents including Campbell and the No. 8 pick in the upcoming NFL draft aims to strengthen the team.
Although Campbell is not the best free agent available, his leadership skills and character make him an invaluable addition to any team. The fact that the Falcons was his top choice among several other teams shows that he sees potential in their success.
The Falcons’ defense struggled last season, allowing 376 yards per game. Campbell’s addition should help address this shortcoming and set up the team for better performance this season. Fontenot stated that they still have work to do to improve both sides of the ball, but Campbell’s acquisition is a significant step forward.
Campbell’s signing brings a positive vision for Falcons fans ahead of the new season. However, the Falcons need to continue strengthening their roster throughout free agency and the coming draft to ensure a successful playoff run. Nonetheless, Campbell’s experience and character will undoubtedly provide a boost to Atlanta’s defense as they aim for a strong campaign this upcoming season.
