The Washington Commanders’ head coach, Ron Rivera, has expressed his confidence in young quarterback Sam Howell and his potential to lead the team on the field. The team has opted not to pursue Lamar Jackson this offseason, as they are focused on developing Howell into their starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
The decision to focus on Howell was partially due to a roster construction issue – pursuing Jackson would have meant losing some key veteran players. However, the team is not ruling out drafting a quarterback high and is considering every opportunity.
Rivera is heading into his fourth season as head coach and will be starting his fourth quarterback in the season opener. Howell will get the first crack at being the starting quarterback, but he will have to come in and earn it. Jacoby Brissett could also potentially earn the starting position. Rivera plans to handle the competition by having the players compete and tracking every snap to make it as equal as possible.
Evaluating quarterbacks is more difficult than evaluating other positions because it is “THE position.” However, Rivera hopes that working with a preseason game partner will allow for a more in-depth evaluation of the quarterbacks.
Ron Rivera sees potential in Howell, comparing him to Brock Purdy, who had a great season last year. While Howell had only one start as a rookie, he threw for 169 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and also ran for a touchdown. Rivera believes that Howell has shown positive signs of maturity and confidence towards the end of his rookie season.
Rivera is excited to have Jacoby Brissett in his quarterback room. He did some background check on Brissett and found out that he is great to be around young quarterbacks and a quick learner. Rivera believes Brissett has the necessary physical skills to contribute on the playing field.
Brissett’s experience, athleticism, and drive will be good for both the team and Sam Howell. Rivera sees potential for a strong quarterback room with Brissett and Howell pushing each other to be their best.
Rivera emphasized that while Howell is the team’s first quarterback, he is not necessarily the starter yet. In any case, Rivera will play the quarterback who gives the team the best chance at winning games. The Commanders’ focus on developing Howell as their starting quarterback shows their commitment to building a promising future for their football team.
