Apple TV Working on a Multiview Experience for Sports Content

Apple TV is reportedly working on a four-up multiview feature that would allow viewers to watch multiple streams of sports content at once, similar to YouTube TV’s feature. According to the code found in the iOS 16.5 beta 1 build by developer Steve Moser, it confirms that Apple is actively working on the multiview feature.

Apple’s Multiview Feature Targeting Sports Content

The focus of Apple’s multiview experience appears to be targeting sports content specifically. This move makes sense given the competition in the market and Apple’s recent investments in streaming sports content. These investments include a live sports deal with Major League Baseball and a ten-year streaming deal with Major League Soccer.

Multiview Feature Tied to Apple’s TV App

The multiview feature is expected to be tied to Apple’s TV app and may prompt the viewer to try the option when browsing sports content. The user will have an option whether to start watching the stream on full screen or start watching in multiview mode. The strings mention a grid layout, and an error message will be shown if the user attempts to add a fifth game to the grid.

Not Officially Announced Yet

Although Apple has not officially announced this feature, it is expected to be included in the company’s next big software release, iOS 17. It is uncertain when this new feature will be launched, but it will likely not become available until sometime during the iOS 17 software update cycle.

Upgrading Picture-in-Picture Feature for Live Sports Matches

In addition to upgrading its multiview experience, Apple is also working on upgrading its picture-in-picture (PIP) feature on Apple TV for live sports matches. The TV app already offers live streaming of popular sports games including MLS Season Pass and MLB Friday Night Baseball.

Supporting Up to Four Simultaneous Streams

The code references in the iOS 16.5 betas describe a new “Multiview” experience for the Apple TV app, supporting up to four simultaneous streams. Quadbox PIP streaming is already offered by some third-party apps, so it makes sense for Apple to match that experience for its own sports streaming.

Targeted at Sports

This multiview feature appears to be targeted at sports for now and is a feature of the TV app specifically rather than a systemwide video player feature.

Final Thoughts

With Apple’s investments in streaming sports content and advancement in their Apple TV app features, this multiview experience could bring significant value and convenience to sports fans. However, we will have to wait for the official announcement regarding any updates or new features from Apple. As we approach the release of watchOS 10, we can expect updates for watchOS 9 to become smaller in scope. WatchOS 9.5 beta 1 is now available for registered Apple developers and can be updated either through the Apple Watch companion app on the iPhone or by going to Settings > General > Software Update menu.
