Apple has released its latest software update, iOS 16.4, for iPhones and iPads with several new features and improvements. Among them, the most significant is the iCloud feature that detects and removes duplicate photos and videos from shared photo libraries. The feature, which was in high demand by users, was previously available only for personal libraries.
With the new update, users can select the “Duplicates” option in the Utilities menu to view all detected duplicate images. The feature also identifies alternate versions of images and merges them while retaining the quality of the highest version. The app notifies the user whether the files are exact copies or merely similar before continuing with the merge process.
Apart from this feature, Apple has introduced several other updates that users will appreciate. The HomeKit architecture has been upgraded to improve the reliability and communication of smart home accessories. Emergency SOS via Satellite expanded to more countries.
The latest patch carries significant tweaks for IT admins managing fleets of devices. MDM tools can now query the model number of Apple Silicon Macs, with many highlights involving improvements in MDM handling of these systems.
For managed iPads and iPhones, MDM systems can now query model numbers to help detect spoofing attempts and improve endpoint management. Profile-based Wi-Fi networks are now prioritized above any local manually known networks when seeking a connection – a useful boost to security.
Additionally, Apple’s newly approved emojis by the Unicode Consortium have been added to iOS 16.4. Users can enjoy new variations representing families with different skin tones holding hands, women with facial hair, and more.
Safari web push notifications are now available for websites added to the iPhone and iPad’s Home Screen. Focus support for web push notifications is incorporated into Daily Summaries. Third-party browsers like Chrome can now let users add websites and web apps to the Home Screen.
Updates have also been made to the Podcasts app, Wallet app, Apple Music app, and Siri capabilities. The tips app now displays user guides for devices that can be used with an iPhone. There are bug fixes for Ask to Buy requests and Matter-compatible thermostats.
iOS 16.4 lays groundwork for high-yield savings accounts for Apple Card owners through Goldman Sachs. Additionally, signs of unreleased AirPods have been spotted in iOS 16.4 code.
The new iCloud feature will be incredibly useful for those sharing libraries with friends and family who already have copies of the same photos and videos. However, users must exercise caution when using automatic bulk deletion options with irreplaceable photos and videos.
Moreover, while iCloud has undergone significant improvements over the years after facing problems in the past, users must always have backup copies of their images outside of iCloud.
In conclusion, iOS 16.4 brings many user-friendly features and improvements. Users can download the latest update on their iPhones or iPads by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
