Dungeons & Dragons and Minecraft Join Forces for New DLC Adventure

Two of the biggest names in the gaming industry, Dungeons & Dragons and Minecraft, are teaming up for an exciting new adventure. The “Monstrous Compendium” DLC, featuring Minecraft monsters, will be available for free to D&D Beyond users.

D&D Beyond Offers Monstrous Compendium Volume 3 with Minecraft Monsters

The “Monstrous Compendium” Volume 3 will feature new creatures from Minecraft adapted for use in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons. The monsters have been designed by veteran game designer Dan Dillon and are expected to operate like they do in Minecraft but with a humorous twist.

This is not the first partnership between Dungeons & Dragons and outside intellectual property. Past partnerships included Nerds candy, Penny Arcade’s Acquisitions Incorporated, and Critical Role’s various campaigns. The partnership with Mojang, the maker of Minecraft, aims to reach new audiences while providing a new way to play D&D.

Minecraft DLC Allows D&D Fans to Learn through Unique Adventure

In addition to the “Monstrous Compendium,” Dungeons & Dragons and Mojang are partnering to create a unique DLC adventure release this spring. Players can choose from four classes – Paladin, Barbarian, Wizard, and Rogue – while facing classic D&D beasts like Beholders and Dragons.

The DLC supports both single player and multiplayer adventures with about 10 hours of gameplay. It offers unique features like voice acting and dice-rolling mechanics for combat. Although this may not be enough for dedicated D&D fans, the project aims to give Minecraft players an opportunity to experience a classic tabletop roleplaying game.

In addition to the collaboration with Minecraft, Wizards of the Coast announced three new figures featuring Xanathar, an owlbear, and the Displacer Beast. Hasbro is launching a new Secret Lair drop for Magic: The Gathering, featuring six cards based on the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie characters.

The D&D Direct showcase featured a conversation with author R.A. Salvatore, discussing writing for video games compared to novels, and the creation of “Menzoberranzan,” the new expansion for the Neverwinter MMO. Viewers also got a sneak peek at Joe Mangianello’s upcoming documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons.

Wizards of the Coast hinted at new D&D modules and books as well as pre-alpha gameplay footage of their official virtual tabletop in development. As D&D Beyond becomes the linchpin of One D&D, the next iteration of Dungeons & Dragons, exciting collaborations between different gaming industry leaders continue to emerge.
