Italian automaker Lamborghini has revealed Revuelto, its first plug-in hybrid supercar. The car features a powerful combination of a V12 combustion engine and three electric motors that produce a total of 1,001 horsepower. With 13 different drive modes available, the Revuelto can switch from fully electric to high-performance aggressive driving with ease.
The hybrid system in Lamborghini’s Revuelto is designed to expand the car’s dynamic bandwidth while increasing the perception of its V12 engine. The 6.5-liter V-12 engine is naturally aspirated and is aided by three electric motors, two mounted on the front axle, and one integrated into an all-new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
One remarkable feature of this vehicle is that it is more agile and precise on the move due to torque vectoring. The electric motors are oil-cooled axial flux units that are more compact and have higher power and torque density than previous models. As a result, this hybrid sports car promises to be more approachable and accessible than previous mid-engined V-12s developed by Lamborghini.
The Revuelto’s battery pack mounted between the seats can only produce a peak current flow of 187 horsepower. Nonetheless, the battery can be charged through a plug like a typical EV for purely electric driving. Once the battery reserves become depleted, the car will operate like a standard hybrid, switching between electric and gasoline power.
Moreover, charging the battery only takes 30 minutes on a 7 kW power supply. Additionally, regenerative braking replenishes some of the energy used by the vehicle while in operation.
The design of the Revuelto is both familiar and different from previous Lamborghini models. It features new details such as hooded headlights modeled after the Panigale superbike created by the automaker’s sister brand, Ducati.
In addition, the car offers more cabin space than its predecessor, the Lamborghini Aventador. Drivers have access to 13 separate drive modes, including a new EV-only setting intended for low-speed urban driving.
According to Lamborghini, the Revuelto sports car model is the fastest they have ever produced, with a top speed of 221 mph. The car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds, promising huge performance despite the minimal EV-only range.
Deliveries of the Revuelto started later this year, and the first two years’ production was already fully ordered. Lamborghini’s next new model will be an entirely electric car expected to be unveiled in 2028, according to reports.
Lamborghini has shifted focus towards sustainability, digitalization, urbanization, and geopolitics to better cater to the evolving automotive market. The company aims to create HPEVs that distance themselves from typical hybrid norms as cars get closer to transitioning into a battery-electric reality.
The price for the Revuelto has not been revealed yet by Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. However, he stated that all new plug-in hybrid models would cost significantly more than models they replace.
The Revuelto and a replacement for the Huracán will be built on the same assembly line and share more parts with each other. This production line saves time while ensuring quality control.
In conclusion, Lamborghini’s Revuelto is a significant step towards a more sustainable automotive world. Despite technical challenges, Lamborghini’s HPEVs offer alternatives that maintain the heritage and identity of Italian sports cars. The Revuelto raises performance levels with its hybrid system while making it more accessible to drivers at the same time.
