Flash Flood Warning Issued for Oahu Due to Thundershowers

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning for Oahu on Sunday night amidst heavy thundershowers that left parts of the island inundated.

Flash Flood Warning in Effect for Oahu

The flash flood warning was in effect until 12:45 a.m. Monday as rain rates of up to 3 inches an hour were recorded in some areas of Central, Windward Oahu, and the North Shore.

flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in drainages, streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low-lying areas. Public road closures are possible in some areas as well as landslides in steep terrain. Strong thunderstorms will impact portions of Honolulu until 10 p.m.

Flood Advisory Issued for Oahu and Other Hawaiian Islands

In addition to the flash flood warning, a flood advisory was posted for Oahu until 11:30 p.m. Drenching rains also triggered flood advisories for parts of Maui and the island of Hawaii.

Pockets of heavier rainfall and isolated thunderstorms were expected to continue into early Monday morning. Breezy trades would focus showers over windward and mauka areas through midweek.

Dangerous Conditions Amidst Heavy Rains

The hazardous conditions spurred by the heavy rains have led to several incidents across Hawaii. On Oahu alone, heavy thundershowers resulted in flooding on the H1 Freeway eats and westbound in town. Major flooding occurred across many roads across islands especially Kaua‘i.

Kauai also witnessed a powerful spring storm that led to a flash flood warning on Wednesday leading to multiple rescues by Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel.

Safety Measures Advised Amidst Extreme Weather Conditions

In light of these extreme weather events causing flash floods, landslides, and property damages, safety measures have been advised by the authorities. People are being asked to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Furthermore, people should completely avoid hiking trails during these times, as there would be a higher risk of being caught in a flash flood or landslide. The NWS has also urged all to follow weather updates and heed warnings as they made available by the authorities.

Authorities also advised that it is essential for residents to be prepared during such extreme weather events by having necessary supplies on hand, securing their homes and securing outdoor objects that could become projectiles due to high winds.

Conclusion

As the wet season continues in Hawaii, residents must remain aware of the risks posed by heavy rainfalls since even brief periods of rainfall could lead to dangerous flash floods or landslides.

Therefore, people must stay vigilant when extreme weather warnings are issued and follow safety guidelines strictly to avoid any potential disasters. It is essential that the public takes the warnings and advisories seriously and understand the life-threatening risks posed by natural disasters.
