Winter storm warnings have been issued by the Rapid City National Weather Service for western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming and northern Nebraska as a potent winter storm is expected to hit the region. The highest impact of the storm is anticipated in the northern Black Hills, eastern foothills and western plains with heavy snowfall expected from Monday to Wednesday.
The snowstorm will move from south to north, hitting the I94 corridor first, with Highway 2 and areas north being affected by midday on Tuesday. Winds will increase during the day on Tuesday, creating low visibility in areas where it is snowing. Wednesday will see wind ramping up even further, creating whiteout conditions that will bring travel to a halt.
Unfortunately, forecasters have stated that precise snowfall totals are difficult to predict due to uncertainties in the track of low-pressure systems and sleet and freezing rain placement. However, it is very likely that the storm will cause blizzard conditions with heavy blowing and drifting snow, leading to extremely low visibility.
The Black Hills region will be heavily impacted by the storm, with moderate to heavy snow bands expected to cover most of the area by early Tuesday morning and last through the entire day. Some areas could receive 6-12 inches of snow, but many places will likely see over 12 inches or more.
High winds are also expected on Tuesday with gusts predicted at over 55 MPH leading to blizzard conditions. Temperatures will remain low with high temperatures struggling to climb above the high 10s/low 20s. Wind chill factors may even drop into single digits or below zero.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the entire Newscenter1 viewing area. Ranchers and those in the calving season are advised to complete their preparations by noon on Monday. Preparations must also be made for significant impacts in agriculture, travel, business operations, schools, and interstate travel.
The storm is expected to continue through Wednesday with snow totals predicted to exceed 12 inches or more in the Black Hills and areas east and south. The winds may lead to road closures and undrivable roads for 24-72 hours. People are advised to prepare for the storm as early as possible, relying on multiple sources of information such as local forecasts, state transportation departments websites and social media updates from federal agencies.
In conclusion, a potent winter storm is expected to hit western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming and northern Nebraska from Monday evening to Wednesday morning with heavy snowfall predicted. While the precise snow totals remain uncertain due to uncertainties in low pressure system track and sleet placements, snow totals forecasted may exceed two feet in some places. Preparations must be made early enough, with ranchers advised to complete all their preparations no later than noon on Monday.
