Severe Storms Cause Widespread Damage and Injuries in Arkansas and Iowa

Severe storms ripped through several states in the Midwest and South, causing significant damage and injuries. In Arkansas and Iowa, the storms tore roofs off buildings, uprooted trees, and destroyed vehicles. According to reports, over 50,000 homes and businesses were without electricity, leaving many people stranded.

Rare High-Risk Forecast

The National Weather Service issued a rare “high-risk” forecast for severe thunderstorms, violent tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail across the Midwest and South. In Little Rock, Arkansas, residents described a tornado that appeared suddenly out of nowhere and caused widespread damage to homes and businesses. The tornado threw debris into the air while shattering buildings along its path.

State of Emergency

Arkansas Governor declared a State of Emergency due to significant damage in central Arkansas. The state also activated the National Guard to help with search and rescue efforts. Emergency shelters were opened for those affected by the severe weather.

Search and Rescue Efforts

In Wynne, Arkansas, search and rescue efforts were ongoing after a tornado threw debris into the air and caused injuries. Emergency personnel worked tirelessly alongside volunteers to locate missing individuals.

Damage Throughout Arkansas

Tornadoes caused damage throughout various cities in Arkansas. Pulaski County Special School District near Little Rock held students in place due to tornado warnings. Reports indicated significant damage in Jacksonville with an accident causing slowed traffic on State Highway 440.

Hospitals Report Critical Conditions

Hospitals in the Little Rock metropolitan area reported patients coming into their emergency rooms with some in critical condition. Baptist Hospital treated at least 21 people who were injured during the storm – five of whom were critical. CHI St. Vincent Infirmary was “seeing a high volume of patients” in its emergency room. Arkansas Children’s Hospital experienced injuries among children due to the storm.

Emergency Response Personnel at Work

Emergency response personnel are working to assess the damage and locate injured persons. An Emergency Operation Center has been established at the North Little Rock Justice Center. Authorities have urged people in affected areas to stay away while rescue operations are ongoing.
