In the midst of the upcoming annual Boao Forum for Asia conference, China is preparing to receive several foreign leaders in attendance. Premier Li Qiang is expected to deliver a keynote speech at the event, while other leaders of Singapore, Malaysia, and Spain are also attending. Further discussions between their representatives and Chinese officials are scheduled to take place afterwards.
The Boao Forum’s theme for this year is “An Uncertain World: Solidarity and Cooperation for Development amid Challenges”. Furthermore, it intends to provide an international platform for exchanges to advance peace, development, and win-win cooperation. Given that several international crises have taken centre stage recently, Beijing has explicitly only one request from attendees of the conference: create an environment where diplomacy can thrive.
As Singapore represents a key economic force in Southeast Asia, China hopes that its mutual interests would allow both nations to deepen their partnership on multiple fronts. In a similar vein, with Sino-Malay relations warming up in recent years, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will also be making a pit stop in Beijing to bolster said connections. Even further beyond that lies Spain; with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’ visit being seen as a chance for bilateral relations growth.
Meanwhile, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez recently announced the establishment of diplomatic ties with China according to the “one-China” principle. Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that diplomatic relations should never be a bargaining chip for any nation seeking short-term gain, let alone use it as leverage.
In its latest press conference, the spokesperson touched upon some international issues, ranging from criticisms of the US’ China policy, to the current state of the Ukraine peace talks. Additionally, China has offered to welcome Honduran students studying in Taiwan over to China once diplomatic relations begin with Honduras.
Lastly, the World Bank recently published its annual report on the Asian economic outlook and integration progress. Apart from discussing Asia’s role in global affairs and ongoing monetary policies to combat the effects of COVID-19, it mentioned the importance of addressing issues such as inflation and labor market instability in many economies. The report also emphasized creating more sustainable supply chains and investing in green industries for a prosperous and stable future.
In the end, it is clear that despite tensions and differing opinions, both China and various international counterparts aim to prioritize dialogue and cooperation above all else. As they navigate through major challenges at hand, a lot could be gained by working together towards mutual interests.
