Huge Landslide in Central Ecuador Claims Several Lives and Buries Dozens of Homes

Landslide Wreaks Havoc on Andean Community in Central Ecuador

A massive landslide hit an Andean community in central Ecuador recently, burying dozens of homes, claiming several lives, and leaving at least 62 people missing. The confirmed toll stands at seven, while more than 30 people have been rescued, and 23 people are injured.

Around 500 people were affected by the disaster, with 163 homes destroyed or damaged. Footage from cameras captured locals fleeing their homes with help from neighbors and transporting their belongings to safety. Schools in the area have switched to online classes, while firefighters from nearby cities have been dispatched to aid in rescue efforts.

The Pan-American Highway Destroyed Due to Landslide

The landslide not only devastated homes and buildings but also destroyed a large section of the Pan-American Highway. With the emergency response agency reporting that 60% of potable water service in the area has been affected, the situation continues to worsen.

The disaster has prompted authorities to order evacuations of hundreds of homes, with three shelters set up to care for those affected. Ecuador’s president Guillermo Lasso visited the area and offered his support for extending the rescue operation to find more missing people.

Difficult Conditions Hamper Search for Survivors

Despite round-the-clock search-and-rescue efforts involving professionals and indigenous people from nearby areas, challenges remain due to the difficult terrain and depth of debris. Rescuers are feeling tremors in the ground, which is raising concerns about another landslide.

Authorities had warned of potential landslide danger for a large area in Alausi back in February that included parts of the zone where this recent disaster hit. With more than 2 million cubic meters of earth, mud, and rocks covering the area, searchers continue to use heavy machinery to look for survivors.

Grief and Hope as Relatives Await News

Relatives of those missing continue to dig through the dirt with spades in hopes of finding their loved ones. They are hoping for the rescue of survivors or locating their bodies for mourning. With fears that more landslides could be triggered, the rescue operation continues as long as there is hope and faith.

In conclusion, this disaster has shaken the local community and has been a reminder of how dangerous landslides can be. Ecuadorian authorities have pledged support to help those affected rebuild and recover from its aftermath.
