Pope Francis presided over the Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square after recovering from bronchitis. The tens of thousands of faithful who attended the service were delighted to see him, and many had worried about his health after his hospitalization. The mass was one of the longest services on the Church’s calendar, but even though Pope Francis was seated under a canopy and wore red vestments over his coat, he seemed energetic.
Despite his hoarse voice, which was still a sign of his recent illness, Pope Francis read a 15-minute homily that focused on moments of extreme pain, rejected love, and loneliness. In it, he expressed concern about abandonment and highlighted the plight of the poor, migrants, and prisoners who are often disowned and exploited. He deviated from his prepared speech to talk about a homeless German man who recently died under the colonnade circling St. Peter’s Square.
Palm Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday before Easter and marks the beginning of Holy Week. It commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his trial, and crucifixion. Jesus rode a donkey and was welcomed with palm branches which symbolized goodness and victory. The donkey also represented peace and fulfilled a prophecy from Zechariah 9:9.
To believers all over the world, Palm Sunday represents a significant spiritual event that prepares them for Holy Week. While many Christians celebrate this day with great fanfare and joyful expressions of praise by waving palm branches, it is also an opportunity for serious reflection and prayerful introspection.
The Passion of Jesus is a living call to follow him in our own time, whatever the cost. It reveals God’s way of drawing history toward the Beloved Community of justice and love. Jesus’ Passion is the only road to Easter and the Beloved Community. By commemorating the Passion of Jesus, we are challenged to take up his redemptive mission in our own time and place.
Overall, Pope Francis’ words and the solemnity of Palm Sunday provides believers with an opportunity to reflect on how we can bring greater compassion, justice, and solidarity into our lives. As we enter into Holy Week, it is a reminder that amidst hardship and rejection, love endures and triumphs.
