A single father named Alexei Moskalyov from Moscow was sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly discrediting the Russian army in his social media posts. Moskalyov’s teenage daughter, Maria, drew a picture of missiles next to a Russian flag heading towards a woman and child standing by a Ukrainian flag, which led to a criminal case against her father. She was taken away from him and placed in a local rehabilitation centre for minors, with the pair denied contact. This has attracted national attention as Moscow’s crackdown on criticism of the offensive in Ukraine gains more traction.
This week, Moskalyov fled house arrest the eve of his final court hearing in Yefremov, Russia. He managed to escape and crossed the Russian border to Belarus. However, Belarusian authorities detained Moskalyov following a request from Russian police. He is now at risk of losing parental rights in a separate trial set to begin on April 6.
Memorial, Russia’s top human rights organization, has labeled Moskalyov as a political prisoner and considered his case an attempt to intimidate all opponents of the conflict. The case gained national and international attention due to Moskalyov’s teenage daughter, Masha, who was separated from her father and transferred into state care. His social media posts came to authorities’ attention after Maria got into trouble at school for drawing a pro-Ukrainian picture last year.
Thousands of Russians have been charged with criticizing Russia’s war in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion last year. This case highlights a new level of repression in Russia where the Kremlin has been tightening the screws on all forms of public dissent. Even some of the Kremlin’s hardliners have expressed misgivings about the severity of Moskalyov’s case and have called for a review of the verdict.
Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner private military company, signed a letter calling the sentence against Moskalyov “unjust, especially in view of the fact that his daughter Masha will have to grow up in an orphanage” and asked the prosecutor to review the legality of the sentence. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on Moskalyov’s case but expressed concern about the living conditions of his daughter. Involving children in cases like this paints a bleak picture of authorities and harms their social image.
The case of Alexei Moskalyov is one among countless such cases where free speech is suppressed and dissenters punished. While some call it a necessary measure to maintain law and order, others see it as draconian and regressive. The future of Moskalyov and his daughter hangs in uncertainty, as legal proceedings against him continue.
