Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed Named Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Likely Successor as President of the UAE

Background and Significance of Sheikh Khaled’s Appointment

In a significant move, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Emir of Abu Dhabi, has appointed his eldest son Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Khaled is now expected to eventually become the President of the UAE, replacing his father.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reportedly made this decision as part of his efforts to centralize power and concentrate it within his family. This move not only reflects a trend across Gulf Arab monarchies towards direct lineage for succession but also indicates that Sheikh Mohammed sees his son as best-suited to lead the country in the future.

Power Centralization in Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Khaled’s appointment comes 10 months after Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan became the President of UAE following the death of his brother Sheikh Khalifa. The appointments appear to be aimed at centralizing power within Abu Dhabi – which is the political capital of UAE – in an inclusive way.

In addition to Sheikh Khaled’s appointment, Sheikh Mansour, a brother of Sheikh Mohammed, was named Vice President of UAE along with Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Meanwhile, Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan were appointed as Deputy Rulers of Abu Dhabi.

Rise to Prominence

41-year-old Sheikh Khaled has risen to prominence with his contributions at the country’s state security service and as Chairman of the powerful Abu Dhabi Executive Office. He has been groomed by his father in positions of authority in security, economy, and governance.

Sheikh Khaled holds a degree in political science from Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and is also a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He has been actively involved in various development projects in Abu Dhabi as well.

UAE’s Strategic Significance

The UAE is known as a close ally of the United States and is home to Dubai, a major international hub for business and travel. The country has become a political and economic powerhouse with state-of-the-art infrastructure over the past half-century. It has rapidly transformed itself from a desert region sparsely populated by Bedouin tribes.

The UAE has cultivated close ties with neighboring Saudi Arabia and projected military power across the region as it opposed the rise of Islamist groups. The country is also a member of OPEC and controls some of the world’s biggest sovereign wealth funds. Abu Dhabi, in particular, has one of the world’s wealthiest state investors, with sovereign wealth funds like Mubadala and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

New Alliances with Israel, Russia, and China

In recent years, the UAE has forged new alliances and deepened ties with countries like Russia, China, and Israel. Under Sheikh Khaled’s leadership, it remains to be seen how these relationships might develop further.

The UAE was among the first Arab states to normalize relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords, followed by Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. The normalization accord drew praise from key Western allies but faced opposition from Palestinians who saw it as an abandonment of their aspirations for statehood.

Conclusion

Sheikh Khaled’s appointment as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and his future succession as President of UAE signal a significant shift in power within the country. As he takes on his new role, all eyes will be on how he leads the country into new alliances while maintaining its strategic significance for global politics and economy.
