In a move that highlights the escalating conflict in the Donetsk Oblast region between Ukrainian and Russian forces, the Ukrainian military has released new footage showing a drone strike on a Russian vehicle. The video, which was posted to Twitter by Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, shows a drone flying into a vehicle carrying at least three Russian soldiers driving through a Ukrainian village. The strike was carried out by members of the “White Wolves” group, according to the Security Service of Ukraine.
The video provides evidence of Ukraine’s stance that Russia is actively supporting separatists in Eastern Ukraine. The drone attack is part of Ukraine’s continued efforts to fight back against the aggression exhibited by Russia in recent months. Last week, the Security Service of Ukraine released similar footage showing soldiers destroying various Russian targets and equipment, including tanks, dugouts, and ammunition warehouses. Ukrainian military leaders commented on their success stating, “Glory to Ukraine.”
As for Russia’s response, Newsweek attempted to reach out to the Ministry of Defense for comment but did not receive any response as of writing.
In another display of military might and strategy by Ukrainian forces, a video posted on social media by the Ukraine Weapons Tracker showcased at least a pair of Russian fuel trucks being destroyed by high-precision M982 Excalibur smart ordnance from M777 155mm howitzers in Kulykivka, Luhansk Oblast.
The ground war in Luhansk has been particularly brutal as Russian forces continue their quest for dominance. While attacks like these may not stop them fully, it makes it clear that Ukraine is willing to do whatever it takes to protect its sovereignty.
Russia’s military has been breaking into civilian homes in search of resistance fighters, partisans, and saboteurs, attempting to recruit locals to aid them in their destructive war. However, Ukraine’s employment of drones and smart ordnance is proving to be a significant advantage in the conflict that is increasingly resembling the unorthodox conflict during Yugoslavia’s Second World War seen between partisans and guerrillas.
Ukraine is taking shots at Russia for suffering a considerable number of losses, particularly their fighter jets which have disappeared from the Bakhmut Triangle, an area where nearly 400 Russian planes have been downed. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense publicly poked fun at Russia by using a derogatory nickname while posting a video on social media of a Sovietera Su-24 supersonic bomber being downed by Ukraine’s forces.
The video showed the aged bomber covered in flames and was shared widely on Twitter. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense also used an insulting tone towards Russia while claiming responsibility for shooting down the plane.
This latest incident comes amidst a continued effort by Russia to exert power over Ukraine through aggression. Putin’s losses in Ukraine are increasingly noticeable as troops are injured, killed, or no longer able to return to the front line.
As Ukraine continues to engage with Russian forces on multiple fronts, it is clear they will use whatever means possible to combat their aggression. Whether through drone strikes, high-precision smart ordnance or by showcasing their military strength online, Ukraine remains resolved in its determination to protect its sovereignty from Russian incursion.
